A man has been killed in a hit and run on a pedestrian crossing in Shirley.

Police are appealing for information after the crash at 8.50pm yesterday on Wickham Road near the junction with Spring Park Road.

The car, a dark BMW, was travelling east along Wickham Road when it hit the man on the crossing.

The driver did not stop.

London Ambulance Service and doctors from London's Air Ambulance attended but the pedestrian, aged 43, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.28pm.

Police believe they know the identity of the victim and are attempting to contact his next of kin.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision and witnessed this incident to speak to them.

Police said the car involved would have sustained damage to its front during the collision.
