A pair of "savage" teenagers have been jailed for brutally attacking a man with a skateboard and stamping on his head in "one of the most violent and frenzied assaults" police said they had seen.

Joseph Tanti and Morgan Stripling, both 18 and of Addington Road, South Croydon, tried to rob their victim before chasing him into a hotel lobby, where they beat him to the floor then punched, kicked and stamped on him as he lay unconscious.

The 27-year-old victim was said to be lucky to survive the attack, captured on CCTV at Waterloo Premier Inn on March 2, which has left him mentally and physically scarred eight months later.

He was walking home from a night out when the teenagers and a third attacker, Sermet Hassan, 19, of Lewisham, approached him in York Road and threatend to stab him if he did not hand over his phone.

He struck out at the the would-be robbers then fled inside the hotel when they attacked him.

The three teenagers chased him into the lobby, where they repeatedly hit him over the head with the skateboard and beat him after he fell to the floor.

CCTV footage showed Hassan taking the unconscious victim's iPod from his pocket while Tanti repeatedly stamped on his head.

Hotel staff called the police and paramedics took the victim to hospital. He was discharged later that day but readmitted two days later with dizziness and memory loss.

Police received several calls about the attackers' identities after footage of the attack aired on BBC One's Crimewatch on April 28.

Hassan handed himself in to a police station that evening and Tanti a week later. Police identified Stripling from information received and arrested him on July 22.

Tanti and Stripling both admitted attempted grievous bodily harm, while Hassan was found guilty of robbery and attempted grievous bodily harm on Wednesday after a three-day trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Judge David Badcup, sentencing the teenagers on Friday, said they had "showed total savagery and disregard for life" and their victim was "lucky to have survived".

He jailed Tanti for nine years with a three-year extended licence, Stripling for seven years and six months and Hassan for five years.

Detective Constable Jamie Keane, from of Lambeth police, said: "This was one of the most violent and frenzied assaults that I have ever seen.

"The three of them were intent on causing serious harm to the victim who was simply walking back home from a night out in central London.

"Even eight months on from the attack, the victim is still suffering from the effects of the attack, both physically and psychologically, but I hope that today's sentence will help him start to move on from this terrible ordeal."
