Muggers who tackled a man to the floor before stealing his wallet and bank card, have been handed a combined sentence of more than 10 years.

Jason Grant of no fixed abode and Caroline Betts from Portland Road, in South Norwood, mugged a 28-year-old man in August last year.

When the pair encountered the man in Portland Road in the early hours of the morning, they told him they could take him to a late night off licence which was still open.

After turning into Doyle Road they tackled him to the ground and said they had a knife, before going through his pockets for his wallet and bank card.

Police were called and took the victim for a drive around the local area. They spotted a man and woman matching Grant’s and Betts’ description and arrested them on suspicion of robbery.

They were charged later that day when the victim’s bank card was one found on one of them.

While awaiting trial Betts was also charged in connection with a separate theft in Bromely on June 27 last year.

Betts approached the victim, who has learning difficulties, outside the Tesco Express store in Croydon Road, Penge.

She told them she had recently miscarried and needed £5, and persuaded them to withdraw some money from the cash machine.

When the victim was about to select the amount to withdraw, Betts reached over, selected £250, before taking the money and running off.

Detectives from Bromley CID reviewed CCTV footage of the theft, identified Betts as the robber, and charged her on October 14.

The pair were sentenced for the South Norwood robbery at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, January 23.

Grant, 35, who pleaded guilty on the first day of the trial on January 12, was handed a sentence of five years and nine months.

Betts, 26, who pleaded not guilty to both charges of robbery and theft, was sentenced to four years and 10 months for robbery, and 12 months for theft, which will run concurrently.
