When Nicole Vassell saw an advert for auditions for the Croydon Stagers’ production of Sister Act, she could have never imagined that in a mere four months’ time she’d be stepping into Whoopi Goldberg’s shoes.

Croydon girl Vassell has previously appeared in choruses in university productions, so attended the audition expecting a small support role.

Yet director Jeremy Tustin immediately spotted star quality in the 23-year-old and asked her to audition for the lead role, without any preparation, and handed her the role of lead Deloris Van Cartier.

He says: “After working with Nicole these last few months, it is clear there was so much untapped talent just waiting to shine through.

“She has worked incredibly hard on the character of Deloris and brings a fresh and new approach to her. “She will instantly command and light up that stage. I have no doubt.”

Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Sister Act tells the story of aspiring disco diva Deloris.

Trying to work her way to the top in 1970s Philadelphia, Deloris falls in love with a very tough, and very married, gangster, Curtis.

When she witnesses him commit a murder police place her in hiding in a convent that has fallen on hard times.

The austere lifestyle is new to the singer, but she finds her calling working with the choir.

Vassell says: “There were so many things that I was feeling when I found out I’d be playing Deloris – shock, nerves, excitement… it’s such a big task.

“I’ve really loved every moment. The songs are so catchy, the dances are super fun – and all the laughs I’ve had along the way have made the whole experience worth it. I’ve definitely got the performing bug now and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working so hard on.”

Alongside Vassell will be a large cast from a broad range of ages, giving many Stager members the chance to shine.
