Three men arrested after armed police and officers in riot gear raided a travellers' camp in South Croydon have been released without charge.

Police detained the trio following reports of firearms found by baillifs at the camp, a former car dealership yard, in Brighton Road in Friday.

The road was shut for about three hours while officers entered and searched the site with sniffer dogs.

In dramatic scenes, police handcuffed two men on the pavement outside the camp while a helicopter circled overhead.

A third was arrested later.

Dozens of officers attended the site, formerly occupied by Select Motor Company and now owned by Lidl.

But all three men, who were arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm, were later released and will face no further action after no weapons were found.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The enquiry has been closed unless further evidence becomes available."

It is understood police were called a bailiff looking to evict the travellers from the site, which they had occupied for a few days.

There were about six caravans and several vans in the yard on Friday.
