A Brit School dance student from Epsom will compete in the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent this week after impressing judges Amanda Holden, Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams.

Shyam Morjaria, an 18 year-old member of the Khronos Agoria dance company, originally from Cavell Way, Epsom will compete in this week's live semi-finals, which began yesterday, May 22, and will continue until the Thursday, May 26.

This will be the group’s first live televised performance, and Shyam’s father Bhavin Morjaria said: “We were very, very excited. We’re over the moon”.

He explained that his family has been supportive of his son’s dancing career since he first began to express interest at about nine years-old.

Khronos Agoria's audition

He said when his son began the audition process for Britain’s Got Talent, there was some fear of getting the family’s hopes too high.

Mr Morjaria described the family’s mixed emotions of hope and fear as “sceptical but positive”. He credits the fact that his son is “mentally strong” to the reason why he’s been able to stay confident and successful throughout the competition.

He said: “They have really worked hard and have a very high potential for going through to the finals.

“But it all depends on the voting. Every vote matters, so we need the support.”

Although Shyam is spending long days and sometimes nights rehearsing – his father said he comes home from rehearsals at 11pm some nights – preparing for this week’s riveting semi-final, it hasn’t taken a toll on his relationship with his family.

His father said that although it is hard not to see his son for most of the day, the whole family understands that dancing is his dream throughout his dance studies at Brit School and “he wants to take it further”.

As for fame, Shyam’s father, who owns a dry cleaning business in Upper High Street in Epsom, said that customers have started to recognise his son from television and ask him about it.

He said: “People have told me they started watching the show because of him.”

You can see Shyam Morjaria preform live with Khronos Agoria during the Britain’s Got Talent semi-final this week on ITV at 7.30pm.
