The man who exposed Maria Gatland’s terrorist links confessed it was a bluff.

Dr Peter Latham, the researcher for the Save Our Schools campaign, said he divulged ambiguous details as he wanted the council to think “he knew what they knew”.

But he was “gobsmacked and amazed” when it transpired none of the council were aware and Mrs Gatland had tendered her resignation from the cabinet.

He said: “I wanted them to know that we knew because I assumed they knew. I thought we might be able to use it to get some publicity.

“I am glad I did it now. I have no sympathy for her. The future of our children comes first.”

Dr Latham said he was given the document last week at a meeting at Ashburton School but could not confirm the details, which is when he constructed his cryptic question for the council.
