A 17-year-old girl killed in a car crash has been named as Mikeala Stevens from New Addington.

Miss Stevens, from Cudham Drive, was killed after the car she was riding in smashed into a telegraph pole in Overbury Crescent on Saturday.

Neighbours heard the car driving along the road, sounding its horn, at 3.15am on Saturday morning.

One resident heard four loud bangs and raced downstairs to see several of the car’s passengers lying in the road.

Miss Stevens had just returned home after spending an evening with her boyfriend and was talking to her sister on the front doorstep of her house when a friend came by and picked her up.

She went in the car with her friend, believing it to be hers and unaware it had allegedly been stolen from her friend’s mother.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 17-year-old girl has been arrested for aggravated vehicle theft, no insurance, failure to provide a specimen of breath and death by dangerous driving.

"She has been bailed to return on September 2."

Now, Councillor George Ayres has called for the introduction of speed cameras in the area after several young people died in road accidents over the past 12 months.

Coun Ayres said: “We need speed cameras, traffic calming measures like chicanes and we have done for some time.

“We need traffic slowing measures because a lot of the roads in New Addington are straight, long roads and are favoured by young drivers.

“I have already made recommendations to the Council Community Fund (CCF).”

I think that we need to get beyond the 'limited thinking' that speed cameras are the answer to road safety, I would prefer people to be looking where they are going - opposed to being anally fixated on a speedo due to the fear of being persecuted for a slight error.
However, I would like to see the age of driving a car raised, maybe to about 21 years old.
Condolences to the family of the young lady.
