Croydon police officers are out in force, despite the wide-scale travel disruption experienced in and around the borough because of the snow.

Two thirds of the response team officers were on duty on time yesterday and others walked to get into work.

Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Adrian Roberts braved the elements as he walked four miles to Croydon police station from his home to lead by example.

Some officers and staff were stranded at South Norwood police station and forced to sleep there overnight because of the weather.

Officers have been assisting members of the public, by digging out cars that have been stuck in the snow and a PC also helped a partially-sighted woman, who was out in the slippery conditions, to get home safely.

Chief Inspector Mark Nanji, who is in charge of Operations said: “The public should know that whatever the weather, we’re here for them and ready to respond to their emergency calls. The vast majority of officers have made it in for their shifts and as the roads are clearing, we’re able to get our services back to relative normality.”

Chief Superintendent Adrian Roberts added: “Just like last year, my officers and staff are really stepping up to the plate in spite of the difficult weather and I’m very proud of their efforts. Our advice to the public is to take care when travelling, especially on the roads, and make sure you plan ahead by taking food, drinks and extra blankets with you in the car.”
