A quick-thinking street cleaning supervisor saved Thornton Heath's shops from flooding on Tuesday.
The leak, on Thornton Heath High Street, was first spotted by the council’s streetscene officer, Chrissi Russell.
Miss Russell said: “I was driving past at around 11.30am when I spotted what was going on.
“Thames Water were on the case, but the sheer volume of water flooding out meant it couldn’t drain away fast enough.
“I called one of our drain cleaning teams and they were able to suck a lot of the water away so that it didn’t get into the shops.”
