A postmortem examination on badly decomposed human remains found in Mitcham Common is due to be held tomorrow, police said.
It is hoped it will reveal the sex and age of the body, and also determine how long the person has been dead.
Police were guarding the scene of a gruesome discovery last night after a member of the public found decomposed remains near Red House Road about 2.25pm.
After working through the night, forensic experts were set to carry on analysing the scene today.
Yesterday, a police spokesman said he could not speculate as to how long the body had been at the site.
"Even a pathologist would struggle to tell you that," he said.
Police said they were keeping an open mind as to motive until the results of the postmortem examination were known.
