Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is backing Croydon's bid to become the next Canary Wharf.

After Croydon lost out to Newham in the first round of Business Enterprise Zone announcements the Mayor announced he is pushing forward Croydon to get one of the next ten zones.

The Tory Mayor has said he wants to create Canary Wharf style business areas around London to boost the economy.

Twenty-one new zones will be created offering businesses discounts on business rates, fast broadband and reduced planning restrictions.

When asked why Croydon lost out to Newham, Mr Johnson said: “Watch this space. There are ten more to be awarded.

“We'll discuss it with the Council, I'm very, very keen to do it.

“Obviously there are ten more to be awarded around the country and I think Croydon has a fantastic case and that's the point I'll be making to the Government.

The Enterprise Zones have been brought back in use after former Tory Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, first created them in the 1980s.

They are designed to bring new businesses into areas to regenerate them and encourage new businesses to start-up.
