David Beckham could be in line for a sensational move to Crystal Palace, we can exclusively reveal.

The 35-year-old is thought to have approached the Selhurst Park club regarding a dramatic summer move as he wants to return to his home city.

Last season, Palace scored a major coup with the signing of bespectacled former Dutch international Edgar Davids.

And although currently contracted with US club LA Galaxy until 2012, it is guessed Beckham could afford to buy out the final year of his contract as wife Victoria is keen to return ahead of the birth of their fourth child, due in the summer.

A source not close to the Beckhams at all said: "David is a London boy at heart and is probably desperate to come back, which was what all the fuss about a potential move to Tottenham could have been about, but that was never really going to happen.

"I reckon he just wants to come home, and after he saw how Palace were with Edgar Davids, he must know they can make it work.

"Victoria too probably wants to come home, and she would love Centrale in Croydon and Glades in Bromley, which I rate alongside any shopping facilities in Milan, Madrid or LA.

"But I'm not sure she'll be too happy about him playing in front of The Crystals at every home game. They're lovely."

What David Beckham may look like signing for Crystal Palace

One Palace fan, Sam Wise from Purley, had a theory on the move.

"You know that tattoo on his back, the one with the wings?" he said.

"Well, I think that's probably a symbol of his love for the Eagles."

Meanwhile, it is probable that the Beckhams would look for houses across any areas covered by the Guardian, Surrey Comet and News Shopper titles including Wimbledon, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Elmbridge, Kingston, Wandsworth, but probably not Bexley.

A spokesman for Big House Big Gates Estate Agents, which operates across south London and Surrey and likes to claim it finds houses for all the footballers, said: "We have not had a direct approach from the Beckhams, but that's not to say we couldn't find them a nice, family semi in Thornton Heath if that’s what they wanted.

"Although we all know they would want somewhere in Cobham, or Oxshott, just to be near John Terry. Who wouldn’t?"

Crystal Palace laughed when we asked for a comment.
