More than 100 suspects have appeared in London courts over their alleged involvement in rioting.

These include 37-year-old James Best, who pleaded guilty to stealing food of an unknown value from Munchies bakery on London Road, Croydon.

The court heard Mr Best, who has nine previous convictions and serious mental health problems, had been homeless for a number of years and had been in a psychiatric hospital. He was remanded in custody to reappear next week.

Sean Havens, 43, also appeared as a co-defendant of Mr Best, but he pleaded not guilty to burglary at the bakery. He was also remanded in custody to appear next week.

An illegal immigrant from Jamaica was among those who appeared. Jean Paul Brown, 34, gave no indication of plea.

Mr Brown, who was living in Mitcham, was charged with stealing a football shirt and resisting arrest on Purley Way, Croydon. He was remanded in custody until August 17.

Nathan Dempster of Onslow Road, Croydon, appeared in court charged with stealing aftershave and perfume of House of Fraser. The 18-year-old college student has no previous convictions and did not enter a plea.

The court heard his family were shocked and disappointed to find he had been involved in the crimes, he cried when he learnt he was remanded in custody until August 17.

Olufemi Akande of Princess Road, Croydon, appeared charged with the attempted burglary of Staples. Mr Akande, 20, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody for a week.

Aaron Samuels of Penge Road, Croydon, was also arrested at Staples. The 29-year-old appeared charged with burglary dwelling and attempted theft. He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody until August 17.

Among those dealt with at Camberwell magistrates court were Bryon Cawley of Truslove Road, West Norwood, and his friend Shourov Choudhury of Landsdown Road, Croydon.

The pair, both 19-years-old pleaded guilty to burglary at Iceland in Croydon town centre and were remanded in custody.

Brothers Samuel Caillaux, 20 and Michael Caillaux, 18, who live on Brighton Road, Purley, were also arrested in connection with ransacking Iceland.

Samuel did not enter a plea at Tuesday's hearing but Michael indicated he would plead not guilty.
