Croydon Council failed to publicise any of its events for National Libraries Day.

It comes as fears grow over the future of the borough’s libraries, with the council in a joint venture with Wandsworth to tender out their library services to the private sector.

Despite holding several readings and workshops, none of the council’s events were publicised as being part of National Libraries day, which takes place on February 4.

A spokesman for the council said: "There were a number of events that took place under National Library Day this weekend.

"Central Library hosted author Monica Carly, who read from her new novel The Golden Thread with a Q&A session afterwards.

"And artist Chie Kutsuwada held a Manga workshop at Central library teaching the art of drawing Manga characters.

"Other events included Rhymetime and Storytime in several libraries. There were also localised displays showing the most borrowed items in libraries.

"Our libraries continually host events to encourage a love of books and reading and not just on National Library Day.

"The fact that the central library is the third most popular in the UK indicates that the council’s work to promote it and other branches has had a positive effect."

On the council's website, events in libraries for February 4 were listed without reference to National Libraries Day.

As well as looking to outsource its library service, Croydon Council has recently terminated its agreement with Lambeth over the Upper Norwood Joint Library.
