An amateur photographer from Croydon caught a rare glimpse of Venus moving across the Sun this morning.

David Candlish, 33, from Sandilands, Croydon, was up at the Addington Golf Course at 4am to see if he could take some pictures of the rare spectacle.

This particular astronomical event won’t take place for another 105 years.

It looked like he was in for a wasted trip with cloud cover preventing Mr Candlish from taking any clear photos.

But his patience paid off when the clouds parted and he had a clear view of the Sun.

He said: “I have always been into astronomy and photography. I didn’t have any specialist equipment but I still got some good photos.

“It was clear for about 15 minutes so I just took as many photos as I could.

“I made a homemade solar filter and stuck it to some cardboard with some sellotape. I then held it in place whilst I was taking the pictures.

"Anyone could do this at home. You don’t need anything special.”
