A education administrator who has dedicated 25 years to supporting pupils in making the correct career choices has been honoured by the Queen.

Jean Marsden, who has worked in a number of roles for John Ruskin College, Selsdon over 25 years, was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) when the list was published on Saturday June 16 for her services to education.

The mother of four said: "I am so grateful to be mentioned. You see celebrities and sports people being honoured so I was so surprised as just a normal person. I knew the College put me forward in September and I am so delight to be considered."

As admission and reception services manager she works with both pupils and staff, offering advice on course options and careers, as well as supporting students from difficult backgrounds.

She said: "Working with teenagers can be challenging but i guess I have become known for adding a personal touch. I get so angry with people who just demonise teenagers. A lot come from challenging backgrounds but just need some support."

Tim Eyton-Jones, head teacher at Ruskin College, said: "Her attitude and approach has consistently been well above and beyond for every year she has been here. You can speak to staff past and preset and they will all talk glowingly of the respect they have for her."
