Tributes paid to Caterham father who died suddenly at Lord's

A young father of two has died suddenly at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Friends and family attended a funeral service for Phil Standing at Croydon Minster on Friday July 13 after the 30-year-old collapsed at a corporate event at the home of cricket on June 28.

A post-mortem examination found no obvious cause of death.

Mr Standing lived with his wife Kate and twin 20-month-old boys Ben and Oliver in Caterham, after moving from the Hampshire area in 2007.

A talented sportsman who represented Hampshire at schoolboy football level, Mr Standing studied Maths at Warwick University, where he met his future wife.

His mum Sue, a retired physiotherapist, who lives in North Baddesley, said: “Phil was always popular at school. And in spite of his success, he was always modest and unassuming.”

Mr Standing studied to be an accountant following university and landed a job at Ernest & Young.

Lee Watson, a partner at Ernst & Young, said: “Phil always inspired me with his commitment, quality and integrity. He was quick to laugh and made friends easily.

“Phil was a great guy, one of life’s true gents and a genuinely nice person to spend time with, he will be dearly missed.”

His older sister Ruth, who now lives with her husband and son in Australia, said: “Phil was not only my dear brother but good friend, staunch supporter and a huge part of my life.”
