Plaque to historic underpass unveiled Plaque to historic underpass unveiled

A plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the world’s first re-inforced concrete underpass has been unveiled.

Community group the People of Portland Road commissioned the plaque, unveiled on July 31, to be placed at the end of the Norwood Junction underpass to recognise its architectural significance.

The group plan a series of plaques around the town to recognise the area’s history.

John Hickman, a member of the group and local historian, said: "This was one of McAlpine’s first works and was unique at the time."
