Croydon town centre to get new pedestrian crossings

Work on pedestrian crossings which form part of a huge project to redevelop the town centre is set to begin.

The toucan crossings, which are designed to be used by both pedestrians and cyclists, will be installed on Park Lane between Queens Gardens and Croydon College, and at the Park Lane end of the Croydon Flyover.

A pedestrian crossing on Barclay Road by Croydon Magistrates Court will also be upgraded to a toucan crossing.

Each crossing is part of a new cycle route running west to east being created to link Wandle Park and Lloyd Park as well as part of a greater £48m Connected Croydon.

This scheme includes a number of masterplans for the town centre and surrounding area, and will be funded by government money provided after the riots, Croydon Council, Transport of London and the Big Lottery Fund.

Councillor Jason Perry, Cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transport said: “These crossings make a huge contribution to our plans to help more people of all ages to enjoy convenient and safe routes by foot or by cycle to our parks and green spaces via the town centre’s shops, restaurants and bars. We are working hard to keep delays to a minimum and ask people to bear with any delays while we start the transformation of our town centre.”

The crossings will be constructed one at a time and works are expected to last from September 10 until mid-November.
