A Croydon school won a national competition to design a futuristic airport terminal.
A team of four pupils from Selsdon High School entered the BAA competition which challenged young engineers to design an airport adventure zone.
The designs ranged from a 4-D cinema to a balloon lift with the award for the most creative and best constructed adventure zone in the 12-18 age group going to Selsdon High.
Kelly Bidwell, Jayland Cubitt, Carolanne Volp, Michaela Gregory and their teacher Alan Day - who called themselves Phoenix Experience - walked away with a cheque for £500 and a trophy constructed from parts of aircraft and airport equipment.
Caroline Nicholls, BAA Communities Trust trustee and one of six competition judges, said: "A really amazing level of creativity and innovation was shown by students in developing their ideas and each team displayed a number of novel ideas."
As well as competing in the challenge, the finalists were given a tour of Gatwick Airport and air traffic control facilities and were shown a demonstration by PC Chris Murray and his dog Oscar, who are trained to hunt and seek explosives at the airport.
