A hero Croydon firefighter has won a bravery award for helping to save a severely burned building site worker from certain death.

Mark Hewitt rescued the site foreman from a burning pit of oil that set alight when a 33,000-volt power cable was severed.

I was quite surprised. I didnt think Id get an award for helping someone. I would help anyone in that situation.

David Tugwell survived electrocution when his hacksaw snapped in half, breaking the power circuit. He had been working in an 8ft hole partially filled with diesel in Chadwell Heath, Essex.

The 22-year-old hero and another firefighter from Kent, Kevin Lloyd, feared the worst as the pit that Mr Tugwell had been working in was engulfed in fire. As the fire subsided the two men saw Mr Tugwell, arms outstretched, desperately calling for help.

With no regard for their own safety the men bravely pulled him from the flames.

After dragging him clear and bringing the inferno under control, the pair began to administer first aid.

Medics arrived shortly afterwards and Mr Tugwell was taken to hospital where he received treatment for extensive burns.

After picking up a Royal Humane Society award a modest Mr Hewitt said: "I was quite surprised. I didn't think I'd get an award for helping someone. I would help anyone in that situation."

The two men were nominated for the award by former policeman Vince Fuller, of Croydon, who witnessed the accident.

Dick Wilkinson, secretary of the Royal Humane Society, said: "Mark Hewitt and Kevin Lloyd put themselves at enormous risk to help a colleague who suddenly found himself in extreme danger."

We (The poliski) work 24-7, 365 and actively seek criminals. The LFB do a few hours a day, then play volleyball, then eat, then wash the fire engine then sleep. They're SUCH hero's!! The should be pro-actively patrolling seeking fires and cat's up trees (The wooden types)

Pc Plodski you are an utter ****, you can't possibly be a policeman so stop pretending you are. Firemen risk their lives as much as the police do they should all get pay rises. Nurses even more so.
It is the local Governments who should take a cut to provide the funds for this. To reiterate, you my boy, are a ****.

The point here is do the armed forces get the same recognition for the job they do when they are trained to do it. If you do a job like fireman, police, nurses and the such you know what is expected of you. Someone could think that you go into these jobs just for the additional recognition, the asperation to be a saviour to the community has long gone i am afraid

How wrong you are, saddened, the asperation (sic) to be 'a saviour' or even just to help the community has not long gone, I see it every day, despite the negative whining of people such as yourself.
When will you learn,? its not what your country can do for you,!

Non of the emergency services get real recognition for the work they do, day in day out.

Take me for example, i've worked for the AA for over 2 years now and have fixed at least 11 or 12 cars but no-one gives me any award.

Unfair.
