A former sausage shop in Croydon has been given a Grade II listed status.

The art-deco building which used to be Kennedy's local butchers - which was famed for its sausages - has been preserved for prosperity and awarded the status along with another chain in Camberwell.

The shop, in High Street, South Norwood, served customers for more than 80 years until it closed on December 22 last year, when the chain went out of business.

Culture Minister Margaret Hodge said: "It's fantastic to be able to preserve a little bit of that history - and brilliant to find shops dating from the Victorian era or early 20th century which have not been changed beyond recognition by refurbishment."

"It is right that these wonderfully preserved sausage shops should get the additional protection - an extra skin, if you like - that listing provides."

The listed building in South Norwood boasts original features such as polished glass signs, granite stallrisers, art-deco sunburst transom lights, green and yellow tiled walls, marble-topped counters, wooden cabinets and mirrored panels.

Kennedy's was founded in Peckham 130 years ago and expanded to nine shops all over south London before the business ended.

Good news - they should do the same for the one in Church Street in Croydon.

Listed status has not offered much protection to other noteworthy building in South Norwood in recent years. If the demolition of the William Stanley property on South Norwood Hill is anything to go by, this former shop could just as easily be pulled over by greedy developers in years to come.

Billy, I fear that you are right.

The extension of clone-zone high streets have spread way beyond Oxford Street. It's sad to see community shops swallowed up by blatant consumerism.

How is it that Sainsburys,M&S, Tesco, or Waitrose suddenly becomes the place to supply the foodstuff of the community?

What happened to the local greengrocer, butcher, fishmonger? Most of who provide far superior produce than the "big names".

I think you'll find the old Kennedy's in Camberwell has been gutted and is available as a new rental shop.

If anyone has listed it I don't think they told the owners.

The Listed Kennedy's shop in Camberwell is the 305 Walworth Road branch, the Camberwell Green / Denmark Hill Kennedys was the shop with the rare J KENNEDY fascia name sign and the large KENNEDYS SAUSAGES letters displayed on the upper floors, I wonder if those signs have been removed.

Does anyone know what happened regards the Queens Road building work. The story was featured a few months ago where developers had demolished parts of listed buildings? I recall Mike Fisher was considering taking action but have heard nothing since.
