Hindu worshippers carried a statue of Lord Muruga through the streets of Thornton Heath on Sunday to bless the sick and infirm.
The annual Hindu chariot festival left the Sivaskanthagiri Murugan Temple, in Thornton Road, at 9.30am carrying a statue of the deity for the benefit of those who cannot make it to the temple.
Hundreds of worshippers from all over London thronged the streets, many carrying clay pots of burning embers, others were playing music and chanting.
An organiser said: "The god goes round the streets to visit those people who cannot visit the temple due to ill health or disability."
At the Thornton Road temple, which opened in November 2001, 108 brass pots are filled with different offerings to Lord Muruga, on each of 15 festival days.
The chariot returned to the temple at 12.30pm where people from all sections of the community enjoyed a vegetarian banquet.
