Reggae star up for Grammy

1:42pm Wednesday 5th January 2005

An influential music producer from Thornton Heath has been nominated for a Grammy award for his latest reggae album.

Neil Fraser, who works under the name Mad Professor and runs Ariwa Sounds in Whitehorse Lane, has been nominated for best reggae album for his collaboration with American musicians Sly and Robbie.

The album Dub Revolutionaries is the first completely instrumental dub record to win a Grammy nomination.

Neil Fraser said: "It's very significant that an album that is produced here in the UK has entered the Grammy nominations.

"However, it is extremely ironic that this album has hardly had any radio play or profile here in the UK, but has sold very well in the US."

He said it was time radio stations examined their play lists so the industry could decide whether the UK was in or out of tune with world markets.

The winners will be announced in Los Angeles on February 13.
