An 18-year-old was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for his part in last summer's football riots.

Terry Kevin's family wept as he was led from the dock at Croydon Crown Court last Friday.

Kevin, from Walton Green, New Addington, pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder on October 22 last year, although he had initially opted for a Newton hearing to discover the extent of his involvement in the riots on June 13 after England lost their opening Euro 2004 group match against France.

But on Friday Kevin's defence said he had decided to abandon that hearing and he appeared before the court for sentencing.

The court heard how Kevin had drunk about 10 bottles of beer on the night of the riots and was seen by police throwing bottles at officers.

One officer, Detective Constable Decland Star, was said to have been hit by broken glass from one of the missiles thrown by Kevin causing two cuts to his right cheek.

Judge Cedric Joseph said he would be taking into account not only Kevin's behaviour but that of the entire crowd as he jailed the teenager to 30 months in a young offenders' institute.

He said: "Deterrent sentences have to be passed to make clear that behaviour of this kind is utterly intolerable."

Kevin, who has two previous convictions for common assault, was also banned from football grounds and barred from watching England matches in pubs for six years.

Ten men were jailed for a total of 22 years last month for their part in last year's riots.
