Snow is set to disrupt the biggest shopping weekend of the year.

Commuters are preparing for a hazardous journey home as the cold snap firmly hits.

And forecasters are predicting the snowfall will continue throughout Friday and Saturday, with the Met Office issuing warnings across the south east.

A Met Office forecaster said of Saturday: "A mixture of rain, sleet and snow will move in from the west during Saturday and will move east to affect most parts.

"Potential for significant snow accumulations locally."

I have just come back from Sutton High Street where there are 3 Ambulances dealing with people who have fallen over on the snow and ice.Surprise Surprise the High Street has not been gritted.I went into the Civic Offices and told the security desk what was happening in the High Street and they were going to get hold of the gritting team to tell them.I asked at reception for the Councillor whose remit includes the grtting and they did not know who it was!!!Phoned on the internal system there to be told by someone that all the gritting teams had been out on the roads for the past hour (from 3pm) and that the High Street was now being gritted some 4 hours after the snow had fallen. When I left 2 Coucil workmen had started to put some grit down by Wilkinsons.Shame on you Sutton Council you have let the Tax payer down again - if some of the people have been injured in the High Street that will be more claims coming their way

If it's the special LBS "unactivated" grit it may not help much. I put salt on my forecourt and the snow melted away. For the money that's been spent on the High Street you would expect under pavement heating to keep the shopping area safe. I feel for the suffering of the injured you saw being tended by ambulances and for their crews who must be overstretched by so many calls for help.
