Big freeze to continue across the south east, say forecasters

Forecasters are predicting a snow-free day today as the south east attempts to return to some kind of normality after yesterday's battering.

Trains are running, with operators saying the normal timetable will be adhered to as far as possible, although commuters are being warned there could be some cancellations.

A Southern Railway spokesman said: "We intend to run the advertised service today, although due to the weather conditions, there may be some short-notice cancellations.

"We will, in some cases, run longer trains than normal to provide extra capacity."

However, services to Caterham and Tattenham Corner have been disrupted, he added.

"There will be a shuttle train service between Purley and Caterham connecting with the London Bridge to Tattenham Corner service," the spokesman said.

"If you are travelling between London and Caterham you will need to change at Purley."

Meanwhile, the weather forecast is predicting freezing temperatures despite the lack of snow.

Drivers are being warned of freezing fog and icy roads as the cold snap continues, with temperatures struggling to break 0C.

And snow is set to return later in the week ahead of the Christmas getaway.

Spare a thought for the garden wildlife as it struggles to find food to survive the winter. I managed to clear an area on the patio yesterday using salt rather than unactivated grit and put down seed and dry dog mix. It's proving a popular refreshment stop. Scraps of wasted food matter are not going to go off in this deep freezer weather and won't lie around long before they are collected. The wildlife will receive some sustenance, you will be rid of your Christmas food waste and your waste bin will be lighter which will delight all at the dynamic LBS PR department. It's a win-win-win situation. I'll just add this in anticipation of the fox-haters having a dig - "Go away!" Contrary to some believers foxes do not eat babies or car tyres particularly if there are some palatable scraps to be taken.

Well said Michael. I have been putting bits out for the wild life and also breaking bread up 1st thing in the morning for the birds. Foxes are welcome to take what they want as they need to eat as well. The only time foxes annoy me is when they are mating and make that horrible noise and boy do they make a rackett.

Hi shazza6787! I agree; foxes make more noise mating than do people when they are on the job. Maybe they enjoy it more :)))

Yes well said Michael once again and bang on as ever. It seems that LBS have adopted your ecofriendly approach of refraining from using grit since I made the eco-error of calling the LBS 0208 number on a long since empty grit bin located by a school one week ago. My request to have it refilled seems to have been so far ignored. It's nice to have these bright yellow Christmas decorations lining our streets isn't it ... maybe we could add some lights or tinsel to them or maybe plant a tree in each one or even convert into a soup kitchen for foxes .. ~:-)

I love your suggestions F-M. AROUET and hope Jayne Mccoy the LBS curator of expensive way-out projects and failures will implement asap. Soup kitchens for foxes would be absolutely idyllic, my Freddy would love it. Some gritless bins could become animal shelters for the cold weather while others could stand in for the lack of public toilets for Xmas revellers on the way home from the pub and affected by the cold weather or just fancying a quick puke. Beware though they could become a hiding place for illegals seeking asylum and feeding at the Sutton council tax payers trough. :((
Surprised no one has disagreed that foxes make more noise than humans when having sex. I thought someone might just have a neighbour who could up the nocturnal decibels.

Bread is one on the worst things to feed birds. Don't forget wildlife also need water.
