Waddon byelection: Q&A for candidates

With all the runners of the Waddon byelection announced, Peter Truman focuses on each of the eight candidates with three questions:

• Which three words describe you best?

• If you could only change one thing in Waddon what would it be?

• Why did you get into politics?

Ian Payne, Labour - Experienced, dedicated, concerned.

To empower the local community through consultation.

I wanted to fight Thatcher’s espousal of selfishness and to promote better public services.

Mark Samuel, The People's Choice - Helpful, reliable, honest.

Lower council tax by drawing no councillor’s allowances, parking permits or other perks.

To represent all residents first and foremost, above greedy and inefficient party politicians.

Kathleen Garner, UKIP - Diligent, trustworthy, straightforward.

A decent community area, without disposing of assets to big business.

I become aware of a democratic deficit, with the country ruled by a distant elite.

Mary Davey, Green - Ethical, thorough, decisive.

Every household in Waddon properly insulated at no cost to them.

I joined Labour but left after they voted Tony Blair in and found the Green Party was dealing with the urgent issues.

Jon Cartwright, Official Monster Raving Loony Party - Honest, idiosyncratic, pedantic.

Regulation on the design of letterboxes, to make it easier to deliver election leaflets A desire for resources to be used more equitably Claire Hilley Conservative - Determined, passionate, committed.

Building Waddon’s new sports facilities and swimming pool.

To provide people with a strong representative to fight their corner and stand up for their interests.

Pat Gauge, Liberal Democrats - Perceptive, practical, principled I would change the outcomes for all kids so when educated in Waddon they achieve success based not on their backgrounds, parents or income, but on their abilities.

To use my skills and experience to make a positive difference to local policies and practices, to improve community life and to monitor finances in local government.

Charlotte Lewis, BNP - Loyal, reliable, conscientious.

More street bins.

Britain is an over-crowded island in the far north-west of Europe. How can it be the nearest safe country for Africans or Asians to claim asylum in?

Clare Hilley, Conservative Party candidate - determined, passionate, committed.

Building Waddon’s new sports facilities and swimming pool.

To provide people with a strong representative to fight their corner and stand up for their interests.

I like these words from the Labour candidate... 'To empower the local community through consultation' Mmm sounds good to me... but Labour have have had these types of things happening nationally before - getting back to grass-roots and finding out what peoples concerns are e.t.c.... trouble is it's just all political jaw-jaw and they never get round to implementing what people want - 'it's too costly' 'or we havn't enough money' are the usual excuses... And didn't Labour ignore the one million people who demonstrated and said 'stop the illegal war in Iraq'??

Ian,
You may well be concerned, Labour being so rightly behind in the polls, one wonders if you are concerned enough to condemn the Labour MP’s and Lords found guilty of profiteering from their positions?.
“To empower through consultation“, the same way we consulted over the EU, or the way in which we were consulted on the smoking ban in pubs, maybe it’s the way we were consulted before Labour gave and is still giving Billions to our sleazy bankers, is this the sort of consultation you are referring too?. Or perhaps it’s your open border immigration that you would like to consult people about.
“Thatcher’s espousal of selfishness”. Will you then be calling for the resignation of Gordon Brown, the saviour of the world, for was it not his boom and bust economics that led us into the dire position we are now in?.
Ian, Labour has proved, beyond reasonable doubt, that it is unfit to hold public office, if you are the experienced politico that you profess to be may I suggest a rapid change of parties.

Who is Ian Payne kidding.
'Experienced' both Robert Mugabe (a Socialist like Ian Payne is experienced but you wouldnt want him as a candidate.
'dedicated' dedicated to a ward he has no connections with, Yeah right pull the other one.
'concerned' that he is going to get stuffed in the election and so are Labour at the the next General Election.

Let's hope whoever wins stands up for the kids at Duppas Day Nursery.

Parents were told last week that this outstanding nursery is to be closed. We're opposed to the decision and we'd love to know that the candidates in this byelection will fight our corner.

I am so excited the Bnp are being represented in Waddon. May I say it is long overdue. Charlotte Lewis is setting a brilliant example to all. OK the Guardian have today put up a story about her criminal past. A Pretty pathetic smear. Most caring people love animals and I'm in no doubt she was fighting for what she believes in. I'm sure she will have many supporters just on the issue of cruelty to animals.
Many have buried their heads in the sand with regard to mass immigration, especially in areas where the effects have not been too drastic. Others have literally been driven out of thier homes by the drugs and violence that surround a large majority of immigrants. In dense areas many British people must feel like they are living in a foreign country. Political correctness thats gone stupid. God bless her, she has definately got my vote and most others I know. We are not racist and have friends of all different nationalities, but, enough is enough. Who else is going to stand up for the British people, definately not the Conservatives, Labour or Libs. What on earth happened to the British jobs for British workers crap this Labour government came out with.? Charlotte Lewis sounds like a very caring person. I admire the woman for raising her head above the parapet and representing a lot of people who have been made to feel afraid of representing the Bnp. I would like to see them in government for all our sakes, including of course my own children, who I fear for each time they go out. It didn't used to be like this.
Since reading the article on Charlotte Lewis I've looked at the Bnp webbsite where you can read their manifesto. I'd recommend others do too. It all makes sence to me.
