Waddon byelection: Polling stations open at 7am
11:41am Wednesday 11th February 2009 in
Polling stations open at 7am on Thursday as voting begins in the Waddon byelection.
After four weeks of canvassing, the eight candidates will have just a few hours left to try and gain those all-important votes that could swing the historically volatile ward.
Waddon is the most marginal ward of Croydon Council and has seen its representation swap between the Labour and Conservative parties for many years.
In 1994, Labour won all three seats. Then, in 1998, the ward returned one Labour and two Conservative councillors, one of whom defected to the Liberal Democrats.
In 2002, Labour won all three seats, albeit with one of them scraping home with a majority of eight votes.
In the 2006 elections, Waddon returned three Conservative councillors.
There are six polling stations where voters can decide who will succeed Jonathan Driver, after the former mayor sadly died on New Year’s Eve following a bout of flu.
The polling stations are in Waddon Court Road, Near Prescott House; Old Town Youth Club, Duppas Hill Terrace; Waddon Infants School, Purley Way; Duppas Junior School, Goodwin Road; Howard Primary School, Dering Place; and Regina Coeli RC Primary School, Pampisford Road.
The polling stations shut at 10 pm.
The result of the election is likely to give a good indication of the borough’s inclinations for the local government elections in 2010 and the hotly contested seat of Croydon Central, currently held by independent MP Andrew Pelling.
The candidates are John Cartwright from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Mary Davey from the Green Party, Kathleen Garner from the UK Independence Party, Patricia Gauge from the Liberal Democrats, Clare Hilley from the Conservative Party, Charlotte Lewis from the British National Party, Ian Payne from the Labour Party, and Mark Samuel from the Peoples’ Choice party.

I hope residents give Labour a good stuffing in this election. The lies and smears they have been peddling to Waddon residents have been completely disgraceful.
Worse still, Senior Labour Councillors have been actively involved in the smears, contacting online friends and associates of opposition candidates with vicious lies and untruths.
Do they really think that Waddon residents are that stupid?
I am still waiting for Labour Leader Tony Newman to issue a full and frank apology to all candidates in this election for the disgusting way his party has behaved. Libelling innocent opposition candidates in some of the most personal and vicious attacks I have ever seen is not something that he should condone and encourage. If he had any decency he would seek to reassure Waddon residents that his team will stop spreading these cruel and malicious lies immediately.
Lets hope that when residents go to the polls tomorrow they choose to reject hate and choose to vote for optimism and hope.

I'm afraid standards have dropped that much; and the Con/lab/Libs are to blame. The BNP are here to stay and are the only party that are prepared to do something about it.Like already said Charlotte Lewis is an admirable young lady and at least with her there remains some hope of a turn around to the misery we have endured.

On another note, the fact that the standard of candidates has dropped is not the Con/Lab/Libdems fault, I don't see any of their candidates being so brazen and proud of their poor behaviour and racist views.
At the end of the day, Waddon will make their own decisions, so let's decide where the common sense is when the decision has been made clear.

Ms Lewis can be applauded for standing but it raises serious questions about the standard of candidates the BNP are willing to provide. At best she seems to be naive , ill informed and lacking the basic skills required to represent her community. It's telling that the regular BNP supporting posters have tried to discredit her and disassociate themselves from her posts mainly because she doesn't seem to have learnt the lesson of containing her true highly racist views.
