Turnout down almost 40 per cent

The turnout for the Waddon byelection has dropped by almost 40 per cent.

This year's turnout was 3,192, 28.6 per cent of the electorate.

That figure is significantly down from the May elections in 2006 which saw a turnout of 5,077, just over 45 per cent of the electorate.

The poor turnout could be due to the bad weather conditions, with ice and snow falling from late afternoon onwards.

Congratulations to Charlotte Lewis on a fine achievement despite all the smear tactics. She has shown grit and determination throughout. One can only say it is a shame that other parties had to resort to underhand tactics.

How anyone would vote Labour, after their record when running the council, defeats me. They gave us a 27% council tax increase one year. There's only one way of keeping Labour out and that's by voting Tory. What we need now is a general election. For our country's sake, let it be soon.

It's not going to be before May/June 2010, ie the last possible date Brown can opt for. Those with long memories will remember Labour governments since the late 60's. Heath inherited a massive inflationary situation in 1970 after that famous Labour phrase "the pound in your pocket has not be devalued". Then we had the winter of discontent, in the 70's, and being bailed out by the International Monetary Fund. Now the current mess which Labour won't accept any responsibilty for. Massive personal debt, built on the back of obscene house-price increases, under the guise of the "feel-good" factor . We were definately not "well-placed" to face the recession, or is it a depression. Incidently are Labour still calling it a "down-turn"?
