NEWS FLASH: The British Olympic Association and UK Athletics announced this afternoon that marathon athlete Paula Radcliffe is being withdrawn from Team GB due to medical reasons.

Freya Murray is the reserve for the women’s marathon who will be nominated for the place.

Glen Periera, 43, and son Jannai, 10, from Kingston have got a great spot for the road race sitting on a wall near Kingston bridge.

Mr Periera said: "We came yesterday and didn't have a great view so got here much earlier today. Its a once in a lifetime chance to see this and I've got the Olympic fever now."

The crowds in Esher are drenched, but the cyclists have just passed by to a roar of excited cheers.

Very different scenes to yesterday and a lot wetter, but still a fantastic day. They are now headed towards the spectators waiting outside Hampton Court Palace.

With just over an hour until the women's road race is due through Kingston. The crowds are growing and excitment is building but umbrellas are up again for yet another rain shower.

Ida Whead, 81, from Tolworth has already staked out a viewing spot on the course.

She is a former Kingston nurse, was here yesterday and has slept out for 6 royal weddings.

She said: "We have to support them all rain or shine whatever the weather. It was fantastic yesterday, just brilliant, I had to leave my husband at home and get here early, Im only tiny so need a good view."

Ellen Gandy is delighted after booking her place in the final of the women’s 100m butterfly at the Aquatics Centre tonight.

Bromley-born Gandy, who turns 21 just after the London Olympics, finished fifth in the second semi-final yesterday (July 28) in a time of 57.66secs, which saw her qualify seventh fastest for the medal race.

A World Championship silver medallist in the 200m event last year, Gandy will return to the pool tonight chasing Olympic glory.

The Olympics road race cyclists have passed through Weybridge to huge cheers.

The cyclists have passed through Weybridge to huge cheers. Travelling behind a police convoy, the atmosphere was fantastic.

Even the officers got into the spirit with whistles and high fives. Some even leant out windows to get the spectators cheering.

Some riders are removing their arm warmers now and the sun is trying to make a reappearance.

Mrs Pearson said: "I think it's inspirational for the children, they are the future and it's just great.

"It's once in my lifetime, but she might get to see it again."

All Saints Church in Kingston are offering lots of food and drink today, cups of tea and these gold medal biscuits are going down a storm.

There is also a bouncy castle and games for the kids on the lawn.

All proceeds will go to the church with all stalls manned by volunteers.

Volunteer Hillary said: "Everything is wonderful, its going so well,  lots of people are coming down and we will be back on Wednesday for the time trials."

They watched the mens race yesterday in Richmond park but are hoping for a better view of the women today.

Mr Clark said: "We just walked in, its right on our doorstep. It went past so quickly yesterday we didn't really see much so hopefully it will be better today."

Isobelle said: "I'm really excited."

Walton resident Matthew Hicks, 28, is in Weybridge for the second time this weekend to watch the cyclists power through the town.

The sun is shining again and the umbrellas are being cautiously put down.

Mr Hicks said: "The weather isn't great, but it's the Olympics, in Weybridge, and you don't get better that.

"I'm just looking forward to seeing the women in their tight outfits - that's worth getting out of bed for."

With three hours to go Kingston is fairly quiet but at least the sun has come back out. Go Kingston volunteers are welcoming visitors at the station and are dotted around town giving out maps and information.

The same cannot be said for Walton though where it is pouring with rain.
