Record shop faces the vinyl countdown
 |
| Vinyl solution: Chris Day and Barbara Page are still going to trade online |
A much-loved Addiscombe record shop is facing its vinyl curtain as more people turn to new technology for their music needs.
The Vinyl Resting Place in Shirley Road is a collector's haven and for more than a decade its walls have been lined with everything from Eurovision classics to one-off finds.
But on Saturday, September 15 - 13 years to the day since it first opened - owners Chris and Barbara Day will close the shop's doors for the final time.
Since opening Barbara and Chris have witnessed the rise of the MP3 and iPod and a subsequent slump in sales.
Despite a gutsy fight to keep the shop going, bad luck in the past couple of months has led to the heartbreaking decision to close.
Barbara said: "It all started going downhill after the September 11 disaster because the Japanese and Americans stopped coming over here.
"Then eBay took off and the internet finished off a lot of shops.
"The final nail in the coffin came a few weeks ago when our broadband connection went down, the floods hit our telephone line and we just thought the gods were trying to tell us something."

She added: "It was a very hard decision to make and we shed a lot of tears, but now we've made up our minds and are trying to look ahead and not back."
The couple's loyal customers were also horrified by the news, saying they would write to the council, calling for the prevention of the closure because it would be bad for Addiscombe.
But local record lovers can seek comfort in the fact that Chris and Barbara's extensive range of hits - from military classical hymns to Beatles records - will still be available to buy on their website, as well as at record fairs.
However, the couple were eager to thank all of their customers.
And they also issued a heartfelt message to other record stores: "We wish you the very, very best of luck and sincere good wishes because we do need you."
Barbara added: "I think record stores can still come back, maybe not in our lifetime, but we are hoping that people will get bored of the internet and go back to these shops."
