Carshalton Athletic boss Tommy Williams says he will not walk away if results do not improve after a torrid run of one win in nine games saw the Robins drop to the bottom of the Ryman Premier League.

Williams also insists he has the full support of chairman Paul Dipre, and that he has been given the time to complete the club’s transition from relegation material to promotion hopefuls.

However, Williams, who took over the reins from Dipre at the beginning of October, faces two huge tests to that backing.

This weekend, the Robins travel to third-from-bottom Leiston, who have a game in hand, before a trip to second-from-bottom Hendon, who have three games in hand – games that could define Williams’ future.

“Paul [Dipre] has been great to me, he knows the situation and how I am turning things around and how it will take time. There is no need for a vote of confidence, we’re on the same wavelength.

“This is a transitional period for the club, but I can see the changes taking place from the dug-out. We’re starting to gel better, starting to put in the performances I want to see.

“We may not be getting the result but there has not been much between the two sides. Sometimes we’re not getting the rub of the green, but other times we just need to be a little sharper in both boxes.”

He added: “I am always disappointed when we lose, when things have not gone our way. But the following day I pick myself up and go again, I start looking to the next game and how we can improve.”

And Williams is not short on confidence in his players’ ability to turn the ship around – despite Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Thurrock meaning they have won only two out of 15 league games.

He said: “I am convinced what I am doing is right and that we have the players to do it. We have good players here.

“The games against Hendon and Leiston are important, but then so are all the games in this league.

“If we don’t get anything out of Hendon and Leiston, I won’t walk away, I won’t resign because I know I am the right man for Carshalton.”

Williams is hoping to have Pico Gomes back from injury inside two weeks, while Luke Pigden is also on the verge of returning to the first team.

In the meantime, versatile midfielder Tommy Brewer has arrived at Colston Avenue on loan from Wealdstone.

The rescheduled league trip to Margate will be played on December 11.
