Wimbledon’s goalkeeping legend Dave Beasant admits he is bitter about the loss of his historic club.

Beasant, who lifted the FA Cup after his penalty save helped Wimbledon to beat Liverpool in the 1988 final, made 340 appearances for the crazy gang – the last of which was that famous day at Wembley.

It was 14 years after his departure from Plough Lane that Wimbledon ceased to exist in its current form and out of the ashes of – what some might call – arson, rose AFC Wimbledon.

Now Beasant, at 53, still finds himself torn between affection for AFC Wimbledon and the club he played for.

“People often ask me about the Dons v MK Dons debate and it is one of those things where I have not actually turned out for either team,” he said.

“The Wimbledon I played for is the mother club of AFC Wimbledon I guess you could say.

“But it’s the players like me who played for Wimbledon who feel bitter about the split, because when people talk to me about what I’ve achieved and where did I spend the majority of my career, I say ‘Wimbledon’, they say ‘Oh, AFC Wimbledon or MK Dons’ and I say, well, neither.

“It’s as if part of my history has disappeared.”

AFC Wimbledon take on MK Dons for the first time in the club's history, in the FA Cup second round on Sunday.
