Sutton United boss Paul Doswell is relishing a new year FA Trophy third round clash with Welsh giants Wrexham.

After a 1-0 win over Oxford City in the last round, United’s reward is a shot at the Blue Square Premier title chasers at Gander Green Lane, as well as a chance to claim another £7,000 in prize money.

Wrexham, who were relegated from the Football League in 2008, regularly attract 3,000 supporters to the Racecourse Ground, and Doswell is expecting a good away support to swell the £15,000 winnings United have already picked up from their Trophy run.

Moreover, victory would put United in the last eight of the competition, and tantalisingly close to Wembley.

Doswell said: “It is a great draw for us. What you want is either the lowest ranked team left in the competition or one of the big guns at home.

“To get a home draw was important. We’ve come up against Hereford and Notts County twice in my time here, and each time we’ve performed well.

“So we don’t go into the game worrying about it, we go into it full of hope and if we’re at our best and Wrexham are 10 per cent off their best, then we have a good chance.”

The win over Oxford City came at a price as Craig Watkins was injured in the celebration that followed his winner, and he is expected to be out for a month.

“Tom [Kavanagh] showed great feet and went past three players. It was a good save by their keeper, but Craig was on hand to put it in,” Doswell said.

“But in the celebration, Harry [Beautyman] has rugby tackled him and Craig is now out for a month – it looks as if the muscle has come away from the shoulder, so it is a nasty one.”

Doswell reserved most praise for Kevin Scrivens, after the shot-stopper pulled off a “phenomenal save” in the dying moments.

“It was a header from about five yards, and I think we all thought it was in,” Doswell said. “But Kevin has pulled off a phenomenal save, perhaps one of the best I have ever seen. I’ve seen it back on the video and it is still just as good.

“We have a lot to thank Kevin for because it would have been a hard game going to Oxford on a Tuesday night.”
