Glenn Murray’s late double handed Crystal Palace a first league double over their south-east rivals Charlton Athletic since 1990.

The Eagles 2-1 win at Selhurst Park keeps them within two points of the automatic promotion places in the Championship table.

Jamaican forward Ricardo Fuller had given the Addicks a 15th-minute lead, which remained intact until the 75th minute.

Ian Holloway’s decision to bring on deadline day signing Kevin Phillips paid off as Murray was provided the space to score his 24th and 25th goals of the season.

Eagles manager Holloway said on Phillips’ performance: “Phillips came on and we looked a different team because he caused their two centre-halves a problem.

“It is really important you get a strong bench because it is all about strength in-depth. All my substitutes made a difference for us when they came on. It feels great to get a win.”

Palace looked particularly shaky in the middle of the park in the first half as the inexperienced pairing of Alex Marrow and Stuart O’Keefe came in for injured duo Mile Jedinak and Andre Moritz.

The Eagles were also missing Jedinak’s midfield partner Kagisho Dikgacoi, who scored Palace’s winning goal against the Addicks back in September, due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Holloway’s side were punished for their poor start when former Palace striker Fuller, who left Selhurst Park 12 years’ ago, dribbled past Peter Ramage with ease before hitting a powerful shot through the legs of Julian Speroni.

Wilfried Zaha, who was making his first Selhurst Park appearance since his move to Manchester United, came close to equalising shortly after half-time when he picked up a pass from substitute Phillips before curling a shot just wide of Ben Hamer’s post.

Holloway brought on Phillips’ fellow deadline day signing Stephen Dobbie in search of an equaliser.

It eventually came with 15 minutes to go when Murray controlled a Dean Moxey pass and then finished past Hamer.

Murray sealed the points four minutes later when he took advantage of a Hamer slip to secure Palace’s first win in six games.

Palace travel to fellow promotion chasers Watford on Friday.
