The result at Kingsmeadow last Saturday was enough to bring back memories of the flickering old vidi-printer on Grandstand, which would have recorded the score: Kingstonian 9 (NINE) Cray Wanderers 3.

I probably wasn’t the only one wishing I was there as I received the Twitter updates on the phone – it was certainly much more exciting than the game I was at.

But Ks’ goal haul, a record in the 24 years since the stadium opened, wasn’t the only statistic to shock on Saturday.

This 12-goal thriller followed a goalless opening half hour and just 278 people were there to see it happen.

Even by Ks’ recent standards that was sparse and, in his match report, our Ks reporter Taimour Lay referred to “the AFC Wimbledon effect” as continuing to drain away local support.

That trend made sense last season, when Wimbledon’s first season in the Football League coincided with Ks spending the campaign in mid-table.

But for it to have continued this season, at a time when Alan Dowson’s side are mounting a serious and thrilling promotion push, is rather more puzzling.

But it’s not the most illogical loss of support Ks have had
recently.

Last week they were forced to pay costs by the Isthmian League for appealing against the decision to replay their game at Whitehawk, abandoned in the 76th minute with Ks leading 2-0 back in
November.

It was the third time league leaders Whitehawk’s floodlights had failed this season so it is little wonder Dowson accused the league of “brushing it under the carpet” and described the hearing as “a scandalous night” for football.

Thanks to the generosity of the league, the Brighton-based side remain 11 points clear of Ks with three games in hand, but we can only hope Ks exact sweet revenge in the replayed fixture next Tuesday.

Dowson has guided Ks to a Ryman Premier League play-off final once before with an “us against the world” approach –  but they were beaten in controversial circumstances by Boreham Wood.

But if they can make a genuine title push, let’s hope they start getting the support they deserve.
