By his own admission, Griffin Park was rocking after Brentford’s last-gasp win against Preston on Saturday – but, despite being responsible for the ecstasy in the stands, Sam Saunders is all about the team.

His spotkick deep into injury time lifted the Bees into the League One automatic promotion places.

But they face a stiff task to stay there this weekend when they travel to fellow Championship chasers Sheffield United.

Saunders, who has four goals to his name this season, said: “I was more nervous about the penalty against Swindon last Tuesday as that was a lifeline.

“On Saturday, I’d had a couple of efforts on goal without scoring and so I knew I was due one. The goal seemed so large. I chose my spot and it was great to see it go in.

“Goalkeepers these days have all manner of videos and DVDs to help them second-guess where a penalty taker might put the ball, so you have to be adaptable.

“But you should never change your mind once you’ve started the run-up.”

Sheffield United slipped up last weekend in dramatic fashion, losing 4-0 at Stevenage – who have since sacked manager Gary Smith – to leave the door open for Uwe Rosler’s men.

However, Saunders knows the trip to Bramall Lane is going to be a tough affair.

He said: “It’s a big stadium, although nothing like playing at Stamford Bridge.

“While a cup run was nice, the league is our bread and butter and we need to be on our game up there.

“They are a top side and will be hurting after the Stevenage result.”

Rosler and Saunders have been buoyed by the return from long-term injury of Kevin O’Connor and Farid El Alagui.

Saunders said: “It is like having two new signings. They are huge for the club, and they have worked so hard to be back playing. I would not put it past one of them to  grab a late winner in a game, such is their influence.”

The Bees’ trip to Sheffield on Saturday is live on Sky Sports, kick-off 12.45pm.
