Sutton & Epsom coach Parsons has the faith and the inclination ahead of the new season
Sutton & Epsom RFC open their pre-season campaign this weekend with head coach Jeff Parsons putting his faith in his old retainers.
Despite winning promotion to London Division One South via the play-offs last term, a lack of financial clout has restricted Sutton’s player recruitment.
A handful of trialists have been taken on, while Brendan Kipping, Jack Wilson and Eric Duey have moved away.
Parsons, however, is confident his team can build on last year’s success and, after relegation the previous season without winning a game, consolidate a spot in London One.
“We have largely the same squad, and this is a great chance for them to step up a level in their rugby,” he said.
“It is about consolidation this year – I can see London One being split into a top group of four or five great teams, a middle block and the teams at the bottom struggling against relegation.
“If we can be in that middle block, and sometimes cause an upset against the top teams, I’ll be happy.”
He added: “We have not taken many new players on. It is down to money really. There are some teams in this division that have thrown silly money at recruitment, money we don’t have.
“We expect our players to come down for the fun of the game and a few beers in the evening.”
Sutton & Epsom host CSRugby1863 of National League Three this weekend at Cuddington Court (kick off 3pm).
The season starts proper on September 7 with the visit of Dover.
