Brentford keeper David Button might not be looking much ahead of Crewe Alexandra this weekend, but has admitted November is a chance for atonement.

The Bees made it five wins in a row with Saturday’s 5-0 FA Cup first round win over Staines Town, which came thanks to goals from Alan McCormack, Jake Reeves, Kadeem Harris, Marcello Trotta and Clayton Donaldson.

Boss Uwe Rosler’s men last lost at Stevenage in October at the end of a spell that had seen the Bees secure just three wins in 10 games, leaving them stuck in mid-table.

The resurgence has them firmly established in the top six with games against promotion rivals Peterborough United and Wolverhampton Wanderers to come in the next 10 days as the winter chill begins to bite.

And Button, who secured a third clean sheet on the bounce at the weekend, revealed the squad are looking at the games as a chance to regain lost ground on their promotion rivals.

“We’re looking to build on the clean sheets and wins we’ve been getting recently obviously,” he said.

“Crewe is the main focus at the moment, but there is half an eye on Wolves and Peterborough coming up.

“If we win on Saturday those two games could be vital to us gaining the ground we lost at the start of the season.

“The boys have upped their game and we are slowly doing well as a team.

“Although we have had what we would consider to be not a great start, we are still right up there.”

And the 24-year-old is in no doubt what – or who – has made the big difference to the side’s fortunes in the past month.

“Jonathan Douglas has been great. When I signed he was injured and having not watched Brentford much last year I did not realise how much influence he has,” he added.

“He has been great on the pitch but it is also great to have in the dressing room too.”

Button is winning his battle with fan’s favourite Richard Lee for the Bees number one shirt and his current form is only helping his cause.

Saturday was not one of his busiest afternoons between the sticks, but the result more than made up for cup heartache at Charlton Athletic last season and with Doncaster Rovers 12 months earlier.

“I’ve never had especially great experiences in the FA Cup,” he added.

“I lost 1-0 last year in the third round with Charlton and 2-0 with Doncaster the previous year in the same round.

“It was nice to be on the winning side. They are never easy games and I wass pretty thankful I did not have much to do.”

Button’s reward for a quiet afternoon on Saturday is a trip to either Boreham Wood or Carlisle United in the next round.
