Corinthian Casuals observed a minute’s silence in honour of those people who died in last week’s Arena Corinthians stadium accident in Brazil.
Two people were killed at the Sao Paulo venue when a crane collapsed last Wednesday, raising concerns the ground will not be ready in time for the 2014 World Cup.
The stadium is due to host the tournament’s opening game and will become home to south American giants Corinthians Paulista, who have strong links to the King George’s Field club, when the competition finishes.
Paulista trace their origins to a visit from the Kingston-based Corinthians in 1910, years before they merged with Casuals FC in the mid-1930s.
Corinthian Casuals have twice visited the club in the last 25-years on official club tours to Brazil.
President David Harrison, in a letter to Paulista, said: “We are very conscious of the strong links between our two clubs and can readily imagine the impact of the accident.
“We would like to send warm support from all of us at Corinthian Casuals at this difficult time and in particular to offer condolences to the families of the two workers who were killed.
“In the meantime, please accept our respects, warm wishes and regards from all of us at the club. In glory or sadness, we stand beside you.”
