Holiday periods are always busy times for oval racing drivers and spectators, and this Christmas and New Year are no different at Plough Lane.

Just after the drivers have recovered from the Spedeworth micro madness last week, the national bangers are back out again, headlining the Boxing Day meeting at Wimbledon Raceway, this time in big vans.

Talk about one extreme to another, as last time out they were driving small KAs, Micras and Fiestas.

This time they will be using the largest vehicles on the banger circuit vans like classic transits, as well as other beasts, such as school minibuses and the odd old ambulance.

The infamous Surrey Street Squad from the capital will no doubt be causing carnage as usual with their varied collection of vehicles.

At the last big van meeting, we even had the appearance and ultimately the destruction, of a mobile library.

Crash, bang, wallop: It's time for the big 'uns

If the chaos of a bunch of vans haring around a short oval is not entertainment enough for you, then also on the card are three other formulas.

New Malden’s Brenden Herve will feature as the 1300 stock cars race in their London Championship.

Also featuring are the 2l stock cars - after the thrilling Supreme Championship, the dominance of Morden’s Jimmy Morris in this class is under threat from Brighton's Brandon Osborne.

The rookie rods complete the meeting, where Ted Symes from Carshalton will hope his winter form will continue to reap rewards and trophies for him.

For those not too worse for wear after their Hogmanay celebrations, the doors open again at Wimbledon Raceway on New Year’s Day, for the annual winter nationals.

Always an afternoon of fast action, in 2014 the three pacey formulas will be joined by the boys in the all-action Refine Metals domestic banger league.

After a very lively run out recently, the 2l hot rods head the bill, where Croydon’s Billy Clarke will be keen to secure bragging rights on his home track.

They are also joined by the lightning rods and the superstox.

Both meetings begin at 2pm.
