James Cameron’s shock departure from Walton & Hersham was not for exclusively footballing reasons.

News broke of Cameron’s resignation on Sunday after the Swans’ 2-1 defeat at home to Herne Bay, their fifth defeat in as many games in Ryman Division One South.

But while Cameron said he wanted to distance himself from football, his decision was also prompted by the attitude of some players.

He said: “I was let down by certain individuals in the past few games. There were too many red cards and they have cost us hugely.

“The results have been poor – and I put that on myself – but maybe the personnel just wasn’t right.

“We only pulled our fingers out once the chips were down, and too many times in the past few weeks we have been giving our opposition a one or two goal head-start.”

He added: “The lack of form didn’t help, and this was disgruntling some of the home support on Saturday.

“I wanted to give the club time to get someone else in and consolidate.”

Cameron hinted some time out from football was on the cards, saying: “I’m looking forward to a break to be honest, but I will get back into the game at some point.

“I’ve been involved with several teams now over the past few years. It’s been relentless and has caught up with me a bit. I want some time to myself.”

He added: “I want to thank those who supported me at the club. They are good enough to stay up.

“I hope they do well but I have distanced myself fro

m it now.” The Swans, under care-taker manager Martin Beard, went down 4-1 at home to second-bottom side Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday night, leaving them sixth from bottom. They will be looking to bounce back at Eastbourne Town, who currently prop up the table, this weekend.  A win is vital to avoid getting caught in a relegation dogfight.
