Belgrave Harriers Dwain Chambers was full of praise for his fellow Team GB sprinter Richard Kilty after his men’s 60m gold medal winning performance at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships.

The 35-year-old, who earlier qualified from his semi-final heat by the skin of his teeth, finished sixth in 6.63secs in a very closely contested final.

Middlesbrough-based Kilty, 24, surprised the rest of the field at the ERGO Arena, Sopot, Poland, posting a personal best 6.49secs, edging out American Marvin Bracy by two-hundredths of a second while Qatar’s Femi Ogonode claimed the bronze with 6.52secs.

Chambers, who won the world indoor title back in 2010, admitted afterwards that the better man won on the day,.

He said: “Richard did a great job, held his nerve and kept it together. He ran a great race and a fantastic time.

“I’m just doing what I can to keep up with these boys these days and the better man won.”

Meanwhile his fellow club-mate William Sharman was not too disappointed with his seventh place finish in the men’s 60m hurdles, which was won by Omo Osaghae in 7.45secs.

“Unfortunately I didn’t bring my top game to the final,” admitted Sharman, 29, who clocked 7.60.

“I’m fine it’s about the bigger picture which is the outdoor season. It’s a shame but we will sort it out. There is nothing there to worry about its just one race.”
