Putney boxer Joe Joyce is heading to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games are being crowned the super heavyweight champion of England, and he sees no reason why he cannot win a medal.

Joyce, who boxes out of Earlsfield ABC, beat Frazer Clarke in Sunday’s final of the National Boxing Championships on a technical knock-out.

England selectors billed the championships as the litmus test for the Glasgow Games in July and Joyce is now in pole position to take the 91kg+ berth.

He said: “I’m over the moon to be going to the Commonwealth Games, I have been inundated with congratulation messages on Twitter and Facebook, it’s been great.

“I’ve just got to make sure my training between now and Glasgow is right and I am sure I can medal, in fact I am looking at nothing less than the gold.”

He added: “Turning professional is a goal of mine, but for the time being it is all about the Commonwealth Games, there is no point in getting ahead of yourself.”

Joyce, who went into the championships as the second seed to Clarke, overcame Blaise Mendouo out of Wearmouth in the quarter-finals (unanimous), and Woking’s Nick Webb (TKO) in the semi-finals.

“I would have preferred to be fighting someone else in the final rather than Frazer,” Joyce said.

“We know eachother very well having sparred together a lot, so I went in to the fight knowing what to expect.

“You have to leave friendships outside the ring, it is a sport at the end of the day and we all want to win.”

He added: “He came forward at me in the first round and caught me a few times, but then I came back at him and he took a standing count in the third round.”
