Croydon light heavyweight Huzaifah Iqbal is ready to put his injury nightmares behind him next month, as he prepares to make his long awaited return to the ring.

The 25-year-old will make his first appearance in nearly two years after suffering a near career ending injury when he broke his shoulder during his title challenge for the Queensbury Boxing League’s Novice title.

With his injury problems now looking like a thing of the past, the former contender is already targeting another shot at the title if he comes through his contest on Sunday.

Iqbal has not tasted competitive action since that nightmare evening in 2012, but he is confident it will not be long before he is back up at the top.

He said: “ Although I’ve been out for a long time and had to suffer the operations and rehabilitation, I’m feeling stronger than ever before and I really happy to be getting back into the ring again.

“The injury to my shoulder was very serious and not only did I break it, I also suffered extensive ligament damage and tore my bicep so I’m lucky that the operation was a success and that I’ve been able to come back to boxing.

“I know I’ve been away for a long time but technically I’ve been working on a lot of things in the gym and I’m just starting to get my fitness levels back up again, so I’m feeling really happy with where I am now and god willing this will be a successful return."

Since his absence from the competition, the title has changed hands several times in one of the most competitive divisions in the league, and now Iqbal wants the title.

“I feel ready now to get back into the mix and show people exactly how good I am.

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I want to be the best and win titles in this division, and although there are no easy fights out there for me I will be ready to face whoever it takes to be the champion.

Iqbal’s return to the ring will take place at the Millennium Arena at the Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel.
