England’s rugby sevens head coach Simon Amor came away from the Commonwealth Games with the consolation Plate prize, but he wanted gold.

A 15-14 defeat to Samoa in the quarter-finals on Sunday sent England in to the Plate competition where they beat Scotland (15-12) and Wales (17-15).

Speaking after the Samoa defeat, Amor, who left London Scottish to take up his international posting, said: “I am incredibly proud of the effort the guys showed right the way through this weekend.

“Their heart and their desire and the attitude was excellent, but unfortunately our decision making and our execution at the highest level wasn’t good enough there and as a result we didn’t take our chances.”

Amor added: “We came here with the mission of winning it and we knew that if we played to our potential we could do that, so of course it is hugely disappointing, but that’s the way sevens goes.

“We will take ourselves away, switch off a bit and then put in a performance. We still have a lot to play for – the pride of the shirt and a couple of guys are playing in the sevens shirt for the last time.”

Meanwhile, former Harlequins number eight Phil Burgess had a Games to remember, scoring the winning try against Wales. However, it was not all good.

He said: “Scoring the winning try was terrific. I got some stick for sliding in knees first and I managed to wind myself in the process, so I don’t know if I will be doing that again in a hurry.”
