After four consecutive defeats, Tooting & Mitcham boss Craig Tanner revealed the work that went on behind the scenes to produce a 5-2 win over Guernsey.

A hat-trick from Dan Summers got Terrors back to winning ways in last night’s Ryman Division One South clash at Imperial Fields.

Frankie Sawyer and Bashiru Alimi also grabbed a goal each for Tooting. Recent defeats have seen Tanner’s men exit the FA Cup, the Robert Dyas League Cup and the FA Trophy – hence his relief at the final whistle on Tuesday night.

He said: “We worked hard on pressing high up the pitch during the week, looking at their style of play.

“We set traps for their players in terms of our game plan and luckily they fell for it and we were able to capitalise.”

He added: “I’m very relieved to get the victory because we were on a bad run so it was important to get a win in terms of confidence for the team.”

After bringing an end to the poor run of results, Tanner is demanding his players build on their performance when they host Sittingbourne on Saturday .

“We are going to focus on more of the same at the weekend,” he said.

“Sittingbourne will be a different side to Guernsey, but if we play like we did tonight then we can get the win.

“It is important that we get a string of wins together to build confidence within the team and individual players.”

After consecutive home games, and two more to come, Tanner is confident that they can use that to their advantage.

He said: “We want to focus on winning home games and making it a difficult place to come, which it has not been over the past three or so years.

“The surface here allows us to play our style of football and we seem to play with a better tempo than when we travel away.”

* Tooting will now travel to Herne Bay on November 1 in a rearranged Ryman Division One South fixture.
