Carshalton boxer Ricky Boylan says he is much better mentally prepared for his second shot at the English super lightweight title.

The 26-year-old, pictured, faces Tommy Martin on Saturday night at the O2 Arena for the vacant belt, after losing to Tyler Goodjohn in October last time out.

Goodjohn has since vacated the belt, giving Boylan his second shot.

He said: “I’ve had a great 12-week training camp heading into this weekend, with some brilliant sparring.

“I have learnt so much from them Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis [trainers], and they are surprised at my level of improvement since the Goodjohn fight.

“They did not think I would improve so well, so quickly, and I’ll be taking it all into the weekend.”

He added: “Last time round, I was struggling with a lot personal issues outside the ring, I had some friends who were going through a lot of bad luck at the time.

“Also, I changed trainers about four weeks before the Goodjohn fight, so although I was physically in a good place, mentally it could have been better.”

Goodjohn, who is now going for the WBC International super lightweight title, beat Boylan on a majority points decision.

It was the former Earlsfield ABC man’s first pro defeat in 13 outings, but he is confident that record will not extend to 12 and two.

He said: “Tommy is a good fighter, he’s 10 and zero, and he has a good jab.

“But I know I am going to be too strong for him, and my experience is in my favour – I’ve gone the distance over 10 rounds, whereas he cannot claim that.

“I am fit and sharp, and mentally ready – I am much better prepared, and I’ll have too much for him.”
